Miniatures or Boardgames and Series Games

I'm not unusual in this, but my gaming/hobby time is very limited.  Partially, I've purposely limited it because I have  a small issue with not going overboard with hobbies/latest interests.  I'm all in or all out.  It's not just hobbies I do this with.  INSERT YOUR PYSCHOLOGICAL HELP IN THE COMMENTS. Moderation is not my forte.

Anywhooo, I've been thinking recently about how to prioritize my hobby time and money.  There are so many interests and ways to spend my cash and time, that I need to discipline myself a bit.  As I've begun playing more operational level games like SCS, A Victory Denied, etc, I've come to realize the pleasure and fun of playing games at this level.

And I've found myself not as interested in the tactical games, like ASLSK, Band of Heroes, etc.  This comes as quite a surprise to me because I really like that level of gaming because I feel more like I'm involved with what's happening.  I can visualize the story unfolding in my head.  I put faces to those chits and counters.  Where in the operational level, it's tough to think of the counters as representing GI Joe. They're just big blocks of people and equipment.

Then I realized that what I like better for tactical is the miniature game.  Talk about getting in visually and viscerally.  And even the games that are supposed to be more Strategic, like Command Decision: Test of Battle, it's tough not to see each stand of men as just that a stand of two guys.  (This confusion with scale is probably good fodder for another post.).  And the miniature games I lean toward tend to have the guys represented either one on one or close (one stand equals a squad - which is like ASL and many others. I can abstract that much.).

As of this writing, I've come to the conclusion that I will focus my efforts on gaming in miniatures to get my tactical fix.  This will accomplish a couple things.  I won't focus on buying too deeply into Band of Heroes (even though I want to) and Advanced Tobruk System and even more ASL.  This comes down to money and time.  I don't have the money right now to be a completist or the time to play them...so resist young padawan.

Then I can focus on a few Strategic level board games to get that fix. I've got several that were acquired for Geekway to the West that I can play.  But this also leads me to another obsession or focus of mine: game series.

Game series like ASL, Band of Heroes, SCS, etc. 

And bouncing between the two will help my interest and energy in the hobby. For example, I'm at a stage where I would like to give the boardgames a rest and do some painting and play a game or two.

I was thinking all this when I came across this great post on Kev, aka hipshot, aka the Big Board's great blog about wargaming...) about this very topic.  In fact, as I read it, I thought this person was living in my head considering how closely our stories resemble each others.

Does anyone else have this issue of prioritizing their hobby time?  I know if I ultimately bounce around, I won't accomplish anything. I just want to focus on a limited scope.

Early World War 2 Soviets Finished | Thomo's Hole

Oh man, Thomos is tempting me to start a Soviet army in 6mm.  In all my game wavering, this is an army I've been considering.  Also, I could begin with the armor and vehicles and use my Amis as troops...'cause really at 6mm who can tell the difference.

His basing is great as well. My stuff won't look this good going to battle, but it would be fun to paint up some of those Soviet vehicles.

I Can't Decide What to do

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'm in kind of a funk and also my time is just crazy right now. There isn't a lot of time for hobbying of any kind. In the big scheme it's all good because I love being with my fam and raising the boys and helping them find their passion.  In addition, supporting my wife's growing business is pretty cool.

And there are people with greater issues and problems.

Just trying to keep some perspective.

But this is a hobby blog so let's talk how this affects my hobbying. One way, is that my gamer ADHD (scientists says it afflicts 97.65% of all gamers...to varying degrees) combined with my little time makes it so I spend little tidbits of time trying to figure out what I want to play.

 I've been assembling 15mm for Command Decision for a loong time.  And I partially also went to 15mm because I thought it would interest my 12 year old a bit more. It's easier to get wrapped into the lives of the little guys if you can see them as more like people than little specks of metal (6mm - don't worry, you'll always be my first love.)  I also thought it would be more attractive on a con table as way to attract onlookers. I've really enjoyed 15mm.

But the struggle with it taking so long to get these guys painted up and the lack of time and money to buy what I need, I start to waver, if I really want to keep basing them 2 to a stand and will I ever play CD with them.

 In addition, I've been trying the new slew of Squad/Platoon level games - Bolt Action, Rate of Fire, Chain of Command and deciding if I want to play any of those with the 15mm.  It's a bit of a stretch with the way I'm basing them, but it's not too bad. And I can't decide if I really like any of these.  I'm working through the Chain of Command rules right now. Again, I really want to enjoy and like Too Fat Lardies rules, so I'm trying another set.

All that said, at one point, I thought, "I really enjoy Blitzkrieg Commander II. Why don't I attempt to adapt these for WWII Platoon level games?"  Pete already created a skirmish set for Future War Commander and another BKC player sent me his WWII skirmish adaption of these rules.  But being a gamer, I'm not happy with any of this and have begun to create my own adaptation.  We'll see how this goes.  Here's a video of me explaining this as well.

Loki's Post on Painting and Playing

Loki talks about painting vs playing and what is most important to him.  What is it for you?  I definitely got into the miniatures hobby wishing I could buy all my stuff painted.  However, I've come to enjoy the research and painting part of the hobby.  I don't like cleaning, basing and assembling though.

I've looked into having things painted and I really can't afford it right now.  But I also wonder if I would be happy with it. I'm sure at some level of quality I would be.  It's just fun to see those armies all lined up knowing that I've spent the time to make em look presentable for the table. I like the idea of improving my painting, but really I would rather improve my tables and my ability to get games to the table more quickly.

Some 15MM WWII Modeling

What? I'm actually doing some modeling for 15mm WWII.  I would like to finish the Russians and Germans by the end of summer to play some Bolt Action, Rapid Fire, BKCII and maybe even Command Decision throughout the rest of the year.

Some photos from recent hobby stuff.
Just about done with the Airfix Stug III, 1:76 scale. Just need decals, which I've not done in ages - 30 years. Matte varnish and tracks on. I like the camo job I did on it, though it could be a bit more pronounced.  A second, less watered down layer would do the trick.

Next up is finishing the Bren and 6 pounder. It is fiddly as all get out. Funny, I just read that on someone's blog about the plastic kits found in the Battlefront Achtung box set. That they are less fiddly than the airfix. That would be nice.

I also finished some order cubes for Command Decision, Test of Battle. They turned out okay, If I need too many more, I'm tempted to buy the order cubes they sell.

I bought some of the Litko mini splash markers to use for Naval Thunder. Litko has some cool stuff. I wish they weren't the only US company making bases - wait, there's also Gale Force Nine, and ???  I bought them at Wargamers Cave in Granite City, IL. The markers are cool looking and were $6 for 10. And I got to use them...more on a later post.

While at the Wargamers Cave, I also bought some Forged in Battle 15mm Russians and German infantry. timmy! recommended I look there for these. They're both platoon packs with 40 some figs.  First some thoughts on FIB figures:

• $17 for 40 figs makes about 12 infantry stands for CDTOB, 4 Inf Cmd Stands, a Battalion Command Stand and a couple MG stands. (though it appears I may have been slighted a MG stand. There's one firing and one with the soldier carrying it down facing. .. I would rather have two firing. They show two firing in photos on site...)
• nice sculpts with nice detail 
• looks they'll need minor clean up - though I can feel they'll need a good hot water and soap bath
• price seems decent - though you still have to buy stands for them - though I would anyway. I say all that because these are obviously designed for the Flames of War player in mind. FOW soldiers come with stands. Though they Showed me some cool rubble stands at the Cave.
• not a lot of variety in the figs - not that big o deal, but I can see it turning some people off

Second, on the store - he can get a ton of stuff special ordered. But he stocks a lot of FOW alternative stuff which I think is cool. He has a great selection of the Forged in Battle product. Pretty small shop, just room for three tables, but that's okay. Though I was surprised it was empty for a Sunday afternoon. Next time I will shop online or via phone and have it shipped for $6. It's about 60 miles from my house, so it's worth it to have it shipped.

I was tempted by the FIB figures and the Plastic Soldier company ones. However, the fact that you have to assemble the plastic figs kind of freaked me out a bit. Silly, I know, but I'm used to 6mm, where I've not had to assemble much. Modelling just isn't my thing. But hindsight, PSC may not be a bad option. First 130 figs for about $30. And they're slightly thinner than their metal counterparts which would make the next purchase:

Gale Force Nine 20mm magnetic bases. Bought these at The Fantasy Shop. 20mm is very small. However, Jerry says his CD are based on 5/8" squares - which is smaller than 20mm! So I'm going to try them out.

At the Cave he can also get the Old Glory line of figures...some of them anyway. I need to send him an email to see what he can get and what cost.

My only concern with this set of minis is that there's a lot of what I need to get to fill out the infantry. Accoring to CDTOB, this set nearly makes up the basics for a Russian battalion, however, there's a lot to get. So, something like Command Decision Old Glory are nice because you buy a bunch of different sets to round things out.

All this is why I don't blame anyone new to the hobby getting into Flames of War. They make it very easy to get involved in miniature gaming. You know your base size, your miniature size, and how to make up units. Great visuals, and even in packs that have exactly what you need. Spoon fed, maybe, but you can get in and get going. And, in many rulesets you can use these as is.

How I Label My Troops-WWII-6MM

New subscriber, Alan, asked how I mark my troops:
The first picture is of the German Pz Grens (Yellow background, black writing) Marked with the Company number: in this case, 2nd. And then a dot to say which platoon/unit. In this case you can see that 3rd platoon, 2nd CO is flanking from the tanks right. The 1st platoon, 2nd Company is attacking the front. And, Weapons platoon (4 dots) flanking from the left. 

This second photo is similar. Except, I use letters because the US used letters to designate the companies. The unit at the top and by the tanks is an engineer platoon (gray with black writing).

Birthday Work: The Good Kind

Didn't realize until today that I share a birthday with two of the bloggers I follow: Wargaming Girl and Ray, Don't Throw a 1. Happy BDay fellow bloggers.

The day started with opening a present from mum, or should I say "mom." Anyway, this is the second gift occasion where I've received a wargaming gift. Last X-mas is was Black Powder from dad. This year, GHQ, from mom! But that's many years after getting started in these crazy hobbies. I could completely relate to this post at Lead Doesn't Bleed about gifts and wargaming.
As soon as I saw the envelope I knew it was going to be good:

Fun times ahead, now I need to order some bases from Scale Creep. (Blast, I just saw, as I was looking for the link to his store that he is having a 50% sale on many of his Baccus minis. Including Samurai - but now, most of them are gone...dang.)

After getting the oil changed, I went by the new location of Game Nite. They've moved into their new location from a mall to an old strip mall. However, they have a lot more room (and getting more). Now it's as much about minis as board games. It's also garnered (I don't think this is a good use of the word.) more of a gamer vibe than his previous location. Not sure if this is a good thing. I'll have to think about this.

Anyway, after visiting there, I swung by Miniature Market picked up a 1:3000 Wichita (city where I was born, so only appropriate on my birthday.) and a couple other things.

When I got home I worked on the bocage, hills, European manors, painted the waves on the 1:3000 WWII ships, and washed some samples of the fields to see how that affected them. In the last hour of the day I put some Battletech minis, my son painted, on the dining room table and tried out the Quick Strike rules. (I can blame this on after reading this post on Battletech Quick Strike on the blog On Wargames and Such.)The bocage turned out well. Except, I sprayed them with a spray adhesive, sprinkled flock and then sprayed some gloss finish spray...and man do those things ever stink. Spread upstairs to the point where I had to take them outside to air out. 24 hours later and they're still not good. They're in the garage. It was a lot of work. I hope I don't need to throw them out.

Litko Bases Arrive - Quick Preview

Received the wooden Litko bases yesterday. This wood feels like I could snap it, but it also feels sturdier than balsa wood. The surface is also very smooth. The edges appear to be burnt.

They are 1.6mm thick (They also make a 3mm version). I bought 4 sizes and realized just a few minutes ago as I was measuring up the ships to them that one of the sizes, 60mm x 30mm, isn't for the ships. I got these if I decide to try painting up some 6mm samurai for Impetus.

Fwd: BKC II Game & Geekway

Took a break from the Drydock to play this table my 9yr old setup. Will provide a more detailed AAR when it's finished. I'm through two turns and the US has already destroyed a German reclaimed R35 platoon.

The Germans had "surprised" the US platoon that was going to attack from behind a hill. However, failed command rolls left the R35s in the open.

The next turn saw a rain of bazooka and Sherman fire take em down. The Co had to command them because both platoons had failed their initial command rolls.

My other hobby stuff was my work on getting the volunteers/potentials lined up for Geekway 2012. This will take up a bit more time as we move deeper into April and May.

BMHGA is asking for GMs for Barracks Battles at Die-Con. I would love to, but don't know, w Geekway stuff if I can make that happen.

Naval Thunder Comparison Chart - Renown v. Littorio

As you've seen from previous entries I've been working on some 1:3000 Davco ships. These are British, Italian, and German as I want to play the Atlantic and Mediterranean in WWII. After the last game convention I did a bit of research on Naval rules and not being a huge draw I wanted something fairly straight forward. I.E. less stats and detail.  I certainly see the appeal of General Quarters, but I knew I would never play something at that level on my own. Though, Adam, if you're reading this, I would certainly play in a hosted game.

HMS Renown

Victory at Sea was another, more closely considered, WWII naval game. It also abstracts more things than GQIII. At the moment I can't recall why I moved over those for my own use...but again, The Composer, if you're reading, I would love to play a game your hosting...especially since your miniatures are so well done!

Ultimately, I decided to go with Naval Thunder and I'm pretty happy I did. I've done a couple of solo runs and look forward to trying them with an opponent.

Littorio on the Right

While working on the ships, I've thought it would be interesting to take a couple of the ships and compare the stats to each other. For the first time, I picked the two ships that looked the coolest to me. Actually, the Italian ship Littorio looked the coolest with all the round secondary guns. Then I perused the British ships to compare it against and picked the Renown. Hindsight, I should have chosen a stronger British candidate, but they're fairly close... or are they?

I also thought this would be a good way to introduce some of the concepts of the Naval Thunder rules. I'll probably do this in 2-3 parts to avoid a book of an entry...wait, this is already a book.



In fact, I may end this now. In the next post, I'll discuss these basic stats and what they mean in the game and how they affect the performance and survivability of the each ship.

Though I will leave you with these little tidbits:
FC is Fire Control (RDR is radar and STD is not what you think it is...it's Standard)
AV is Armor Value, this is the main armor
SAV is Secondary Armor Value
AA is Anti-Aircraft value and
SW is Submarine Warfare value

d10s are the dice used in the game
move and firing for each ship type is simultaneous
move and firing is done in inches
each gun has a specific range band based on diameter and barrel length
each gun also has specific penetration and damage values as well

Where I Meet timmy! and Fly a Spitfire

timmy!, who's contributed some input for the blog with is Modern Force on Force! armies had a few people over to play in some Wings of War (Now Wings of Glory), WWI air combat, and some Angels 20, WWII air combat. Angels 20 is the new Axis and Allies miniature game.

I got there pretty late and played one game, as a British pilot, against 4 Germans in their 109s.  Dave S was actually putting the game on and of course had washed the planes a bit to dull down the plastic look, as well as, printed out a map from Google to make the game looka real nice-a. (forgive the bad Italian accent.)

I had the first kill as I shot down a 109 with a devastating roll of 7 hits - which took it out. I also assisted in another kill when Ed and I surrounded a 109. I gave him one point of damage, but then Ed had like 6 hits. - destroyed.

 
I believe this was Dave's first game as a GM and was using the simple rules. Pretty straight forward rules and it sounds like the advanced rules would help it a bit to add some nuance. To me it's a great convention game. Can learn the basics pretty quickly, and once engaged it goes quickly.

Dave does a great job of playing/gming the miniature/boardgame combos. I'll have to do more of a post about some of his conversions.

In addition, it was good to meet timmy! in person and to see his stuff and work area in person.

I like all the lamps and the paint/photo booth.

He has a variety of stuff and has a collection that is, in Dave's words, "era agnostic". Very true. ACW, ECW, WWII, Napoleon, Modern, Battletech, Air, Future, 15mm, 20mm, 18mm, 6mm, ... I will get more into his collection in future posts. I've been tempted to try some Cold War Commander - maybe I could rent some kit from him.

Also, he's made some progress on his Recruit's Somalis. I will have to go to Recruits one year with this group.

Drydock Progress - Complete - Painting Anyway

The ships are "complete." I just need to base them. Which, apparently will be  a couple- to a few weeks.

I went onto the Litko site just to see if they have some kind of order tracking system when I clicked on the button that said "shipping and packaging information." They typically don't get orders out for 21 days...because they custom make their products...oh...Ok. Not really a big deal, but a little surprising. Whatever it takes to keep a miniature gaming business open.

So, now we wait...

I did try the wash on the Conte and the destroyers. Looks a little better. And will have to find the time and take some photos that are a tad more clear than these below.

Modern 20mm Gamer Interview with timmy!

As I've recently posted, I've virtually met a local gamer (within 2 miles) that plays mainly in 20mm, but also dabbles in 6mm and others. He's know as timmy! on various forums around the webs and  He's considered starting his own blog.  Until he's ready to do that, I've invited him to contribute stories here.  We're still working through how this might work.

Q. What scale are these models? 

A. 20mm

Q.  Force on Force, correct?

A.  These pictures were taken for the set of rules called Force on Force by Ambush Alley. It is a supplement book strictly on Fallujah Iraq. Title unknown to me at this time. This is the third book where my models will be pictured. The first supplement book is titled Day of the Rangers:Somalia 1993.   The second book is called Bush Wars:Africa 1967-2010.

Q.  Did you create any of the terrain yourself or did you buy it all? - if you made it yourself, which parts?  

A.  The buildings and roads are done by Gamecraft miniatures. (Side note from TIH: Gamecraft posts some interesting videos. Being from the marketing world, this technique is great. Show the customer how to assemble and paint your product - tremendous. Especially in video form. Don't wait for your customers to do it.) The figures are done by Elhiem Miniatures. Various terrain pieces were scratch built.

Q.  What materials were used?  

A.  Color and black and white print outs shrunk down for signs and newspapers/trash. These were glued on clear plastic sheats that I cut. I sculpted trash bags and built the fruit stand.  The trash bags will be available for sale along with refrigerators and dumpsters on Combatwombatminiatures.com.  All scratch built by myself.

Q.  Do you have a particular scenario/game you're preparing for or is this general terrain building?  

A.  Again this is for Fallujah. It is in no way finished. It will be highly detailed with several blocks for house to house fighting.

Q.  How long have you played Force on force? 

A.  I would say almost two years.

Q.  Why modern? As opposed to any other era? Why Fallujah?  

 

 A.  Fallujah has always been an area of interest of mine. I was planning on building a section anyway so it worked out well. I do a lot of modern gaming, especially in Iraq. I in 04 and 05 I was a contractor providing PSD/ executive protection for several companies. So I try to take my experience and put it in a game.

Q.  What's your history with miniature wargaming? 

A.  At the age of four I started watching my father paint Airfix plastic figures.I stood there for hours!  The bug has always been there. I really got into official gaming when I was 15. A store called Epic Gallery moved close to my house. There is where I spent most of my teen years. Though I always did some sort of gaming with home rules with buddies of mine. Ive been playing with toy soldiers since I can remember.

Q.  What era and scale did you start with? 

A.  At the age of 15 I really didn't have a lot of money for things. I was very very fortunate to have a friend who would buy me armies for GW Fantasy.  I also played WW2, Napoleonics and Civil war.  Heck I play anything but my time is now devoted to painting and playing with 20mm and scratch building.

Q.  Your GMing at Recruits, correct? 

A.  The founder of Ambush Alley (Sean) and myself will be running a Somalia scenario for the debut of their new supplement book Day of the Rangers.

Recruits Game Convention looks like an awesome Midwest convention in Kansas City/ Lee's Summit, Missouri. Just $5 to get in and it looks like a great time with lots of vendors and games being played. I was planning to go this year, but most travel plans had to be cancelled. We'll shoot for next year.
